“Mom, how can a strawberry stand? They don’t have legs.” Said by my son (insert tears of laughter emoji here).
It is once again strawberry season and now, in the year I’m turning 60, I think it’s finally sinking in that strawberry season starts in California in January or February. I guess strawberries seem like a summer fruit because strawberries are for shortcake and that’s a July dessert, right??
Strawberries are the first “summer” fruit that can start brightening up the last days of winter. Actually, strawberries aren’t even a fruit, they are a member of the rose family, that’s right! So, a rose by any other name is a strawberry!
We are lucky here in Southern California to have a local farm that sells delicious, fresh picked from the field strawberries. Manassero Farms has five locations and, at their main Irvine location, they even have an herb garden where you can pick your own herbs!
Fresh strawberries are almost a perfect food. And if you top your oatmeal with them, then you get the protein requirement, too!
