strawberry stand wooden bowlIt is once again strawberry season and now, in the year I’m turning 60, I think it’s finally sinking in that strawberry season starts in California in January or February. I guess strawberries seem like a summer fruit because strawberries are for shortcake and that’s a July dessert, right??Strawberry stand shortcake

Strawberries are the first “summer” fruit that can start brightening up the last days of winter. Actually, strawberries aren’t even a fruit, they are a member of the rose family, that’s right! So, a rose by any other name is a strawberry!strawberry stand basket

We are lucky here in Southern California to have a local farm that sells delicious, fresh picked from the field strawberries. Manassero Farms has five locations and, at their main Irvine location, they even have an herb garden where you can pick your own herbs!Manassero Farm sign

Fresh strawberries are almost a perfect food. And if you top your oatmeal with them, then you get the protein requirement, too!strawberry stand just strawberries

A few of the health benefits of strawberries:

  • Decrease inflammation
  • They are high in potassium which counteracts sodium, thereby helping with high blood pressure.
  • The fiber content is high which, of course, keeps us moving AND helps lower LDL (the bad cholesterol).
  • High water content, always good to stay hydrated.

Find the nutrition facts for strawberries here; but a couple of the high points:
